Bowen is a gentle physical therapy that encourages the body's ability to heal itself. It is neither chiropractic nor massage, but rather uses a sequence of precise moves on certain muscles, tendons, ligaments & nerves. Bowen can assist in making physiological changes to reduce pain, promote relaxation, and improve well-being.
How does Bowen Therapy work?
Bowen works primarily on the autonomic nervous system, which controls over 80% of your body's function. By activating certain stretch reflexes, joint proprioceptors, and fascia layers, this therapy sends signals to the brain to reduce pain, normalize problem areas and rebalance the body. The treatment engages the calming parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging an overall effect of relaxation.
Who can benefit from Bowen Therapy?
Since Bowen Therapy works on nearly all body systems, it can be helpful in a range of health conditions. Common concerns include but aren’t limited to: chronic pain, sciatica, arthritis, indigestion, migraines, hormonal imbalances, PMS, stress & anxiety. The gentleness of this therapy makes it safe for all ages, including infants, children, seniors and all throughout pregnancy.
What can I expect from an appointment?
The first time we meet, we will discuss your top health concerns and formulate a Bowen protocol that specifically caters to your unique needs. Then you will get to lie on a treatment table fully clothed, or sit in a chair if you’d be more comfortable. Cassie will perform your individualized Bowen protocol, in a sequence of precise “Bowen moves” on top of specific muscles, tendons, nerves and fascia. These moves are done in groups, leaving therapeutic pauses in between to allow your body to process the information and re-adjust. Your practitioner will leave the room during these brief pauses to give you the space to fully relax. You may feel a deep state of relaxation or even fall asleep, though everyone experiences the treatment differently. Depending on your health concerns, treatments vary in length between 30 and 75 minutes.
Even after your visit ends, your body will continue integrating the Bowen moves and making the necessary changes for healing. Some pain relief is often felt immediately after the first treatment, with significant changes after 3-5 visits. Cassie provides you with an assessment of how many treatments are likely to help your concern, and she will continue to follow you through as you progress.
Clients are reminded that sustainable change often takes time. Your symptoms may get worse before they get better, which is a sign that your body is processing and readjusting. Aggravations, if experienced, often pass within 5 days. Cassie follows you through all changes to your health concerns, reassesses the need for future visits, and may suggest referral to complementary practitioners when it is in the best interest of your health.
How are Certified Bowen Practitioners trained?
Certified Bowen Practitioners must have previous education in anatomy and physiology, and maintain active first aid certification. Training in Bowen Therapy is both theoretical and practical, integrating both a thorough understanding of anatomy with the physiological applications of Bowen. Students complete supervised hands-on practice and receive individualized guidance from instructors on perfecting the “Bowen move.” In order to receive certification, students must pass both written and practical examinations and demonstrate proficiency in all Bowen protocols.

Preparing for your visit:
Complete the Bowen Therapy Intake Form and return it to the clinic by email, fax, or print to bring with you to your visit.
Treatments are performed over-top of clothing, so clients are advised to wear or bring a change of light or loose fitting clothes. Clothing removal is only suggested with the client’s consent if the clothing is too thick to permit access to the anatomical structure beneath it; in which case, the client will be appropriately draped.
Do not schedule any other therapeutic modality (including chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, EFT, Reiki, etc.) within the 5 days before or after your Bowen appointment. This ensures that the Bowen moves continue to be integrated. Successive Bowen treatments can only be performed at least 5 days after the preceding treatment.
Drink plenty of water before and after your treatment to ensure your muscles and tissues are hydrated. This improves your response to the Bowen treatment.
